Mildly spicy with a citrus, woody aroma, black pepper (Piper nigrum) commonly known as pepper, aids in digestion, helps detoxify the body and new studies are praising its weight loss capabilities. Excellent with almost any dish and excellent for you, a grinder full of peppercorns should be a staple in any kitchen!
The Plant
Black pepper is a vine that bears small single seeded fruit that grows in long thin clusters, (imagine a string of miniature grapes). Peppercorns are made by blanching or cooking and drying the fruit. Our black peppercorns are the unripe fruit, blanched in hot water for 2 minutes and then dried in solar driers, whereas white peppercorns are the ripe fruit with the fruit skin removed.
Health Benefits
Trying to maintain a healthy weight? Recent studies suggest that black pepper can help with weight loss and fight obesity. Piperine, a major component of black pepper, blocks fat cell formation by interfering with the activity of the gene that controls the formation of new fat cells. This reduces the lipid (fat cell) and glucose (sugar) levels in the bloodstream which also supports healthy blood pressure.
Black pepper has excellent digestive and detoxifying properties too. Sending a message from the taste buds to the stomach, black pepper signals an increase in hydrochloric acid secretion which aids in the digestion of proteins and other foods, as well as prevents the formation of gas. As a detoxifier, black pepper promotes sweating which cools the body and releases toxins through the skin. Pepper also alleviates chronic cough, increases the absorption of nutrients in the body, and has anti-tumor / anti-cancer properties.
In the Kitchen
As an alternative to toast with jam, which is sky-high with sugar, sprinkle some cracked black pepper on your buttered toast. Or how about pineapple freckled with pepper? Delicious! Be sure to try our black pepper infused spice mixes too: curry powder hot, curry powder medium and curry powder sweet.
